Transitional Wardrobe – Stretching Summer Fashions into Fall

By Reb Stevenson

Okay, maybe it was just a summer fling with the lifeguard at the waterslides. After all, there’s more to romance than applying sunscreen and getting a wicked discount on hot dogs at the concession.

But guess what? You can have a long term relationship with your summer wardrobe.

Just because it’s getting colder lately doesn’t mean you have to be an ice queen and dump those shorts.

Instead of squandering all your summer savings on a new back-to-school wardrobe, just build on what you’ve already got, suggests GAP Inc. spokesperson Tara Wickwire.

Both guys and girls can jazz up a muted wardrobe in a snap with the hot accessory du jour: the scarf.

Whether it’s a fringed plaid version or the long skinny incarnation, a scarf goes with virtually anything. Plus, at about $20 a pop, they’re a good choice for anyone whose piggy bank’s tummy is growling.

“You can pair these with your dresses, your shorts and tank, or even a heavier sweater and jeans,” says Wickwire.

Experiment away with knotting (maybe you’ll discover an aptitude for the sailing club while you’re at it). It’s unlikely you’ll go wrong unless you style yourself a Pee Wee Herman bow tie. And even then, big points for comedy.

Bangles are another cheap and easy ticket to fall fabulousness. Adorn your wrist with a cluster of different colours and shapes and presto – that’s one heck of a cheerful hand, even if it is taking notes on the Great Depression.

In the same domain: statement necklaces.

“Just add a big necklace to even just a basic white t-shirt and a cardigan,” says Wickwire.

To transition a tank top and shorts ensemble from the cottage to the classroom, Wickwire recommends swapping the gladiator sandals for patent ballet flats in a high voltage colour, throwing on a blazer and finishing off the look with a scarf.

Likewise, no need to scrap your beloved summer 2008 shirt dress. Just add some opaque tights (grey or black) and a blazer and cinch with a belt.

Can’t shake the feeling that you should be the one actually teaching the class when you’re sporting a blazer? Try a cardigan or a vest instead. Both sexes can take advantage of these versatile garments.

“Vests are great in that they add that extra layer but they’re not too hot,” says Wickwire. “Add one over a simple white tank for now, and wear it with a heavier white shirt or blouse later.”

For you lads, shopping needn’t be a pain in the neck: all it takes to upgrade is a casually worn skinny tie. And don’t be afraid to dabble with colour.

“We’re seeing guys in lavender, green, and the plaid trend,” says Wickwire.

If you’re not getting the same kicks out of your Cons lately, convict ‘em and move on to one of fall’s footwear trends: desert boots and combat boots.

The wearing of said military-inspired shoes could give your manly confidence a boost.

(But please note results may vary when your gym teacher bellows: “drop and give me twenty!!”)
